When it became full dusk and the light was dropping rapidly from the sky, the Kid was struggling to pull his pants up. It wasn’t an easy proposition, lying belly to belly and knee to knee. He had forgotten the Apaches for a while. They seemed to be gone.

“Jesus!” Molly exploded as he struggled. “Do somethin’ with that belt buckle, you’re about to cut me open.”

“Sorry,” the Kid muttered, rolling as far to his side as he could. He struggled awkwardly with this taxing situation and a fine bead of sweat popped along his upper lip. He glanced at Molly and in the dim light saw her watching his face. She was amused.

“Kid,” she laughed softly, “If I didn’t know better, I’d guess that you ain’t used that carrot for anything much more than to pee with.”

The Kid felt a flush come across his face. He was glad it was getting dark. He didn’t say anything, struggling to get his belt buckled.

She chuckled, “Well?”

Embarrassed, he said, “Well what?”

“Have you?”

“Have I what?”

“You know what. Have you been with a girl before? You know, what the great unwashed say, dipped your carrot, poked your pod? Don’t act so naïve. Have you had a woman before!”

The Kid looked at her now, suddenly angry. “Hell of a way for a woman to talk.”

She stood up, catching his anger. The Apaches were forgotten. “It don’t matter a good goddam if it’s a woman or a man sayin’ it, that’s the way you boys say it!” She looked at him with scorn. “What are you? Some kinda bible thumper? Too good for a girl like me?” She brushed the pine needles out of her hair. “Jesus Christ,” she said to herself. “I just had me a virgin on the side of a mountain while a pack of goddam Apaches were looking to cut my throat.”

The Kid stood up, slapping the dust off of his pants. “Saltillo,” he said.

“What?”

“Saltillo,” he repeated. “I saw a little Mexican gal down in Saltillo a couple times.”

The black-haired girl cocked her head at him, “So that’s where all that experience came from,” she said dryly. She turned and with a shake of her head started climbing down the rock fall.

The Kid watched her a moment, then, “Hey!” She kept moving. Again, he said, “Hey!”

She stopped and turned, glaring back up at him.

The Kid had to grin. “I love this,” he said. “I just met you yesterday and you get pissed because of a gal in Saltillo and you’ve been with every cowboy in the Territory.”

Her look was long and dark. “What you know about who I’ve been with wouldn’t fill a pissant’s watch pocket!” She started to turn away then turned back, her temper flaring, “And who I’ve been with and who I ain’t been with ain’t none of your business, and just to set the record straight, I couldn’t give a goddam about you or your pokes in Saltillo!”

She turned and started back down the hill.

The Kid laughed out loud, watching her scatter loose stones in her hurry to get down the hill.
