When it became full dusk and the light was dropping rapidly from the sky, the Kid was struggling to pull his pants up. It wasnât an easy proposition, lying belly to belly and knee to knee. He had forgotten the Apaches for a while. They seemed to be gone.
âJesus!â Molly exploded as he struggled. âDo somethinâ with that belt buckle, youâre about to cut me open.â
âSorry,â the Kid muttered, rolling as far to his side as he could. He struggled awkwardly with this taxing situation and a fine bead of sweat popped along his upper lip. He glanced at Molly and in the dim light saw her watching his face. She was amused.
âKid,â she laughed softly, âIf I didnât know better, Iâd guess that you ainât used that carrot for anything much more than to pee with.â
The Kid felt a flush come across his face. He was glad it was getting dark. He didnât say anything, struggling to get his belt buckled.
She chuckled, âWell?â
Embarrassed, he said, âWell what?â
âHave you?â
âHave I what?â
âYou know what. Have you been with a girl before? You know, what the great unwashed say, dipped your carrot, poked your pod? Donât act so naïve. Have you had a woman before!â
The Kid looked at her now, suddenly angry. âHell of a way for a woman to talk.â
She stood up, catching his anger. The Apaches were forgotten. âIt donât matter a good goddam if itâs a woman or a man sayinâ it, thatâs the way you boys say it!â She looked at him with scorn. âWhat are you? Some kinda bible thumper? Too good for a girl like me?â She brushed the pine needles out of her hair. âJesus Christ,â she said to herself. âI just had me a virgin on the side of a mountain while a pack of goddam Apaches were looking to cut my throat.â
The Kid stood up, slapping the dust off of his pants. âSaltillo,â he said.
âWhat?â
âSaltillo,â he repeated. âI saw a little Mexican gal down in Saltillo a couple times.â
The black-haired girl cocked her head at him, âSo thatâs where all that experience came from,â she said dryly. She turned and with a shake of her head started climbing down the rock fall.
The Kid watched her a moment, then, âHey!â She kept moving. Again, he said, âHey!â
She stopped and turned, glaring back up at him.
The Kid had to grin. âI love this,â he said. âI just met you yesterday and you get pissed because of a gal in Saltillo and youâve been with every cowboy in the Territory.â
Her look was long and dark. âWhat you know about who Iâve been with wouldnât fill a pissantâs watch pocket!â She started to turn away then turned back, her temper flaring, âAnd who Iâve been with and who I ainât been with ainât none of your business, and just to set the record straight, I couldnât give a goddam about you or your pokes in Saltillo!â
She turned and started back down the hill.
The Kid laughed out loud, watching her scatter loose stones in her hurry to get down the hill.
